Burn the ships...
I saw this in a comment on Bijan’s blog today. Great quote. “Burn the ships” and give yourself no outs. You’ll be amazed what you can accomplish. Originally posted as a comment by andyswan on BijanBlog using Disqus.

Daryn's take on my "Twitter's Biggest Asset" post
Great comment by Darren on my post today about Twitter. In fact I think he did a better job writing a comment then I did on the original post. There has already been a landrush for twitter names to some extent, so the only viable way for twitter to implement this is to start doing it with new registrations, then start reclaiming idle names. I’d hate to see them start kicking people off of...

Being Effective as CEO
I really like the below post from Albert at Union Square Ventures. For me it opens up a larger issue around putting people into “boxes”.  I have seen it too many times where investors/VC’s/friends/parents put individuals into Silo’s of behavior by which that person is supposed to act and achieve. Whenever I hear a parent say, “X is our wild child and Y is our little...

Twitter's biggest asset
Since Twitter has launched there has been a lot of talk about how do you moentize it.  Over the last few weeks for me it became very clear on how I would do it, by creating a marketplace for Twitter ID’s.  I have seen people write about this idea before but my recent needs have made me believe that this model is the right one. For example, right now I own www.grid.com.  I would also like to...

Hulu and Boxee
Image via CrunchBase I just saw a post in TechCrunch about Hulu being taken off of Boxee.  This sucks for so many reasons and in so many ways.  For those who do not know what Boxee is, it is basically software to run media on.  It does a lot of cool things but one of them was to run on Apple TV and enable Hulu. I really feel bad for the team over at Boxee who are working their asses off but on...

I love Clear pass, but...
I really love my Fly Clear pass that lets me jump through airport security.  Also they received funding from my friends over at Spark capital, so I like them even more. But… I got this email from them today and I just had to laugh.  The full email is below.  The best part is, “To find out if your company offers a discount on Clear, please contact your travel manager.” Travel...

6 months for 4 letters
This summer on a “get to know the local entrepreneur” meeting with a VC, we were discussing trends and projects that I was exploring on the side.  While PhoneTag is my day to day business I always have a few fun projects going. One of those projects was dubbed internally,  Build-a-tel.  The model is something I have wanted to do since 2000.  It is basically a uniform API and GUI for a...

I wonder how we got into this mess?
Image via Wikipedia Well, actually I do not have to wonder as I was just reminded.  I went to Bank of America to refinance my mortgage as the rates have dropped.  Currently I have a fixed rate 30 year mortgage with a healthy chunk of equity in the house.  When I was at the bank the senior loans person suggested that I could get a really low rate if I went to an interest only variable rate loan. ...

Entrepreneurial Medicine
Josh Kopelman did a post today definitely worth reading (Click here).  The post is his ideas about how the “bread crumbs” of data left around the web from all of us could be used to figure out causes/preventions/cures for diseases. I had two major incidents last year that caused me to look at ways that entrepreneurial thinking could assist medicine.  In both cases, my father’s...

Domain transfer in process
I bought a 4 letter domain in August.  The full background story on it is ridiculously long which I plan on telling in a shortened version in the next few days.  But the reason I write about it now is I just put in the transfer request and should have it tomorrow.  I can not wait to get it!  I am going to consider it an early valentines day gift from my wife to me as she did not block my insane...

Andy Abramson, Thank You!
I have eluded to an “issue” that I had with a VC backed start-up (a new one not SimulScribe/PhoneTag) I was doing in late 2008 and the fall out that happened when the lead VC pulled out after the scheduled wire date.  Since I have little interest in publicly spreading negative news about anyone, that is about the most I will go into the bad parts of it. However bad situations like...

Great PR takes thinking out of the box
Ashley Biever who worked with SimulScribe/PhoneTag for a few years in PR is now working with a my friend Scott Wharton’s company Vidtel.  Ashley is great at PR because she approaches it as an entrepreneur and not as the standard boring PR robots. The blog post that she got on Vidtel on Entrepreneur Magazines website says it all.  Click here to read the full article. The below is an...

Thinking about the future of Windows Mobile
Bijan is right, Microsoft should buy RIM. bijan: Earlier this morning the number one story on Techmeme was about Microsoft Windows Mobile. Lots of rumors and speculation about Windows Mobile 7. In 2010. I’m not kidding. Here’s the thing. It will surprise many of you but I’m actually a big fan of Microsoft. They make a bunch of great products (Xbox360, keyboard, mouse) and we rely on...

We need a new bubble!
Image by Getty Images via Daylife The current economic downturn started in the U.S. and has to end here. The fact is, we don’t know how long this will last, but what we do know is that we must make fundamental changes that will turn the global economy around.  The current bail out by Obama is a decent start but just adding jobs will not turn the economy around.  We need something much bigger for...

Watching Superbowl Live on American Airlines
Image by matt.hintsa via Flickr When I booked tonight’s flight from New York to LA last month, I forgot that it was the Superbowl… Using the GoGo Internet on my American Airlines flight and Mahalo Answers I was able to rig up a low bandwidth streaming solution.  When I found out that I would be on the plane during the Superbowl last week, I posted a question on Mahalo asking if...
