The first time I saw a Personal Rapid Transit system was at Raytheon in Boston around 1999 (cool video of that here). The system is a subway that acts like a taxi, each pod can route itself individually to your destination.
If I was the mayor of a large city I would be looking into deploying personal rapid transit everywhere. It almost does not matter the cost. With a system like this you could probably stop almost 100% of the automotive traffic in a city, significantly reducing pollution and increasing overall happiness
It is big projects like this that we need to make to our infrastructure to truly improve the underlying foundation of our economy.
