I never thought of this…

A few days ago I posted a map of the Google street view coverage in the US.  I was impressed how much coverage they now have even in very rural areas.

My buddy Tyler from Mahalo commented on the post, “Now if they’d only do a deal with the USPS or UPS to put cameras on top of their trucks to keep it updated!”  I am not sure if they thought of that yet (I figure they have) or not, but what a great idea.  If they are not going to do that it would seem to be a pretty good investment to do the deal as a 3rd party with USPS, UPS or whoever and just collect the data for others like Bing.

A long time ago I had the idea of doing something similar for the satellite view of mapping programs.  Mount gear on recreational aircraft in order to have a constant stream of refreshed high definition aerial views of the earth.  But like many ideas I ahve had, it had to be shelved so I could focus on my day job.
