Tonight I was looking at Fred Wilson’s Tumblr and I could not figure out how he has comments and I do not. Well he uses Disqus, so I went to the site and got a Disqus account. In order to make it work you need to do some very simple cutting and pasting of HTML from Disqus to Tumblr. While Tumblr should build something to make this easier by say checking a box, I really enjoyed the behind the scenes aspect of doing this. Which made me reflect back on my VOIP days. Even though back then we had great technicians that could program our gateways I learned on my own how to program the Cisco gateways that we had. At SimulScribe I have inserted myself in very granular pieces of the voice recognition where we have experts. In both cases my deeper understanding matched with an “outsiders” viewpoint have helped to create out of the box ideas that have been in some cases breakthrough. So while I sometimes wish everything was a simple GUI there is something to be said about being able to understand what is behind it.
