Home Media

I was putting together all of the network pieces for my new house last night.  We move in this weekend.  The phone system is easy as I will be using Asterisk for that.  Already picked up all of the cool overpriced Cisco IP phones.

The media part is a little harder.  Currently I have all of my media and music stored in iTunes.  It is so easy to use iTunes which is why I have used it.  But there when looking at iTunes/Apple TV for the house there is a major drawback which is pushing me towards doing a Windows Media Server.  With Media Server you can have a centralized DVR.  The ability to record and store centrally is incredible, it allows you to grab huge amounts of content legally and cost effectively.

However there is a major drawback to Windows Media Server, you can not use it with HD yet.  Hopefully the hardware will be out soon for to handle HD but right now there are no solutions for HD.

There are more +/- that I will not bore you with.  At this point I am going to go with Windows Media center as it seems to be the better option long term.  While iTunes is great I do not believe that it will be open enough to achieve everything I would like to.
