We interviewed a few people today and I did not even look at the resumes. I have found personally that I have been unable to use a resume to better my chance of hiring a good person. I now look for other key characteristics and hire based on those.
There is obviously a need for resumes in the corporate world but outside of that I just find them useless fluff sheets. The best hire in my experience is hire who you think will work and fire them quickly if they don’t, creates high turnover but what you are left with is awesome people.
Some furtherdiscussion on this:
So when Seth Godin recently wrote his post entitled Why bother having a resume? and claimed that remarkable people don’t need resumes, I was ready to wholeheartedly agree.
Since my first Internet job in 1997, every job I’ve had has been via a referral. While I have updated my resume a few times along the way, for various reasons, it has never been asked of as anything but a post-hire formality. In fact, I was just commenting the other day that while I’ve had many meet-and-greet type introductory meetings, I’ve never really had a formal interview.
For the first time, however, I’m floating the possibility of spending some time at a larger company, or in a completely new circle. Although I have no doubt I’m qualified, it is a little daunting thinking about facing the bureaucracy of the hr/recruiting/interview process.
For starters, I’m updating my LinkedIn profile, and referring people there.
