T-mobile VOIP (known as T-mobile @home)

I was helping a friend set up his PhoneTag today to all of his lines, Skype, Mobile, Office, Home, and even his J2 account.  He is going to be spending the next 2 months on summer vacation in Europe so having everything go to PhoneTag makes managing his voicemail much easier.

Anyway, when he told me that he has T-mobile I told him that he should upgrade his blackberry to the T-mobile VOIP service because then when he is in Europe and he is on wifi that he can basically talk on his mobile for free (the package is like $10 per month but includes unlimited minutes).  He was excited about the tip and called T-mobile to get the feature turned on.

Well it turns out that the bean counters a T-mobile just could not allow for good product to be great.  The bastards look at the IP address you are on and if it is outside of the US charge you the roaming rate of that country even though you are on the Internet and the cost is the same to T-mobile whether you are in the US or outside.

Since I am not one to bash companies I will make a positive out of this.  What a wonderful opportuinty for someone like a Vonage to become an MVNO, use the VOIP enabled cell phones but allow for roaming.
