California’s new $40 VIP DMV line

I ordered a set of custom licence plates a few months ago.  Well it turns out in order to pick custom licence plates up you have to go to your local DMV and wait in line.  California has a great online system for booking appointments, but the first one that I could get was about a month away, and with my travel schedule who knows if I would even be here when the day came up.

So I went to the DMV and got ticket, #129, they were on 95 when I arrived.  After about 10 minutes I realized I was in trouble when it only at 98.  At that rate I would be waiting for way over an hour to pick up the plates.

I started to walk around and look at everyone’s ticket.  It took me about 5 minutes but I found a lady with #100 who I felt would be interested in a transaction.  So I proposed paying her $40 for her ticket and I would give her my ticket.  Well with a big smile she was happy to sell the ticket and get paid to wait.  The other amazing thing was as soon as I did this 2 other people tried to buy the ticket off of me…

It made me think, with the incredible budget deficits government organizations are facing why would they not offer some sort of VIP level of service for a additional fee.  While only a small fraction of people would pay this if they charge enough for it, the service might produce some decent revenue.

As for those plates, well as some of you might know my son’s name is Oliver so this just seemed fitting.
