Is first class really worth it?
Everyday we all make choices on which level of goods we want to use, from food to transportation. Some of our choices are based on physical budget limits others are more about “is it worth it?”
I was flying back from New York yesterday and the woman sitting next to me said, “is it really worth the money to fly first class”. We were both in first class (she paid, I was upgraded for free off my extremely cheap economy class ticket). So I told her how I decide whether or not to pay for first class and she thought it was a unique way of looking at it so here it is. I use this method in making the decisions for many things other then plane tickets but it is definitely a good example.
When buying tickets I always think if someone was to pay me the difference when I land (the difference in cost between economy and first) would I rather have taken that money or enjoyed the productivity and luxury that comes with first class flying. So for international this is an easy one, most of the time economy tickets are $400-$1,000 and Business/First tickets start at $3,000+. So if someone was to give me $2,000+ when I land in London for sitting in a cramped seat with bad food, I would definitely take the money. However if the difference was say $400-$800 the upgrade is probably worth it as the value of being refreshed and productive on your travel is worth something.
With the economy getting tight this is a great way of figuring out which luxuries are worth it to you to keep and which ones you should cut.
