My thoughts on Christmas cards this year:
1. Emailing a Christmas card is nice for the environment but overall I hate the concept. I am already in email bankruptcy, the Xmas cards are only making it worse. (I hope that I am not offending friends that sent me e-cards, just please take me off the list for next year*)
2. Christmas cards in the mail seems old and outdated to me. Waste of resources and because I get so many I can not really remember who sent one and who did not. My mom actually keeps a list of who she sends Xmas cards to and who she receives them from, to me that takes a little bit of the “spirit” out of the exercise.
3. Corporate gifts I like. However I hate it when companies send out a cheap gift to everyone they work with or have on a mailing list. I already have too much junk and I hate the idea of getting more of it. If you are going to send someone a gift I think that you have to make it a worthwhile gift and do it for the people that truly make a difference. At PhoneTag we send out a handful of expensive gifts to our partners that will be used and enjoyed.
*Like everything in life their are exceptions to the rule. If you are going to do and e-card and you are going to be as creatvie and put the time into it as Josh and his partners at First Round Capital (see above video) then feel free to keep me on your e-card Christmas list.
