Excuses should at least make sense

American Airlines logoImage via Wikipedia

It is hard to go one hour in the work day without hearing “We had to do this because of the economy”.  Some of the things that people are doing in reaction to the economy are absolutely legitimate, other things are using the economy as a convenient excuse.

In a similar spirit, American Airlines woke me up at midnight last night with an automated call explaining that my non-stop flight to Boston had been canceled due to weather.  When I called back and got an agent on the phone she explained to me that we were being re-routed through Chicago (which has worse weather) to Boston arriving one hour later.  So I asked how could my non-stop flight be canceled due to weather but you can route me through Chicago with worse weather, arriving Boston at basically the same time.  Her answer, the flight cancellation was not for weather but when they can use it as an excuse they do, the flight I was on had a light load…

So even though we now have to do a connecting flight and our itinerary was screwed up, it was at least nice to hear someone be honest about the situtaion…
